Teoria 2005/1, pp. 5-24

ABSTRACT
In this paper I will give a simplified presentation of the concept of context, as treated in the analytic philosophy. I will show the main background which provoked the emergence of the notion of context in logic and the philosophy of language. After that I will discuss a particular aspect of the problem: the distinction between semantics and pragmatics, a much debated topics today. I will use the classical analysis given by John Perry (pre-semantic, semantic and post-semantic context) trying to generalize the idea of post-semantic context. I will therefore speak of «cognitive» context and I will follow in detail an example by Perry to show the point where to place the debate on the different roles of semantics and pragmatics in representing the working of language. The point of the paper is to illustrate the difference between attempts to give a semantic description of pragmatic matters (starting from David Kaplan) and radical contextualist attempts (like Francois Recanati) to give a pragmatic description of semantic matters; eventually I will point out some difficulties and problems of the radical contextualist view.
