Abstract

The essay argues that philosophy of religion is essentially not an investigation of religious phenomena but of human existence. The crucial boundary to be crossed is not that from religion to religions or from one religion to another, but from religious and non-religious phenomena to existence. Accordingly, demythologization is not about replacing myths or ideologies with rational discourse, or religious narratives with rational counter-narratives, but about turning from narratives to the act of storytelling and from argumentation to the act of arguing. It is not what is told that is decisive, but the fact that it is told. Humans are not homo sapiens because they are homo faber or homo loquens, but because they are homo narrans.
